A Life of Worship

Most Christians probably associate worship with a Worship Service they attend, typically on Sunday morning. There are other types of services and gatherings as well where we join together with other believers in worship through the singing of choruses and hymns. In these services we readily and freely acknowledge that God and God alone is worthy of all our worship and praise. Our hearts rejoice as we sing "How Great Thou Art" and know that He is awesome beyond words and worthy of all praise and honor. There is complete and total agreement that God alone is the focus and attention of all our worship.

Several years ago I was struck by the thought, "If God is worthy of my worship at any time during a week, let's say during a worship service, why is He not worthy of my worship all the time?" In other words, how can I for a few minutes of worship on Sunday say, "God, you are worthy of all my devotion, honor, worship and praise", and then for the rest of the week worship Him little if at all? To take this a step further, can words of worship, even heartfelt "sincere" words of worship on Sunday, really be a true statement of what I really believe if I don't have a heart of worship during the rest of the week? Is there ever a moment in my life where God is not worthy of all worship, honor, glory and praise?

As you read this some of you might be thinking, "This guy seems to be saying I should worship God continuously, all the time with every breath I take. That's impossible and not practical. Nobody does that, and besides, I have a life to live and many other things to think about." Actually, that's exactly what I am saying (at least the first sentence in that quote). Of course, we must "think" of other things just to navigate through our lives, but the "theme of our thoughts" must simply be worship and adoration of our God. Worship of God is the mark of one who is close to God.

When we see Him in all His glory in heaven, what will our response be? Worship, of course. Worship is the natural response of those who "see" God. As we worship we, see Him more clearly. As we see Him more clearly, we worship Him more frequently and more deeply. To know Him is to love Him and worship Him.

I have tried to explain to people in the past how everyone has idle "thought time" throughout the day which can be replaced by worship and devotion to the Lord. I don't think my advice to anyone in this regard has ever made sense to anyone I have spoken to. I think the better way to approach this idea of a life of worship is to simply say you will devote the thoughts and mediations of your heart to that which is important to you. You will find the time to worship God as you truly see Him and know Him. A great place to start is to take your prayer or quiet time and use that for a worship time. Devote your entire heart and mind to worship of Him with no thought given to anything else. Let His glory, power and holiness fill your heart completely. Let this worship "spill" over into all areas and times of your life.

God is worthy of all our worship, adoration, glory and praise.

I will exalt you, my God the King;
I will praise your name for ever and ever.
Every day I will praise you and extol your name for ever and ever.
Great is the LORD and most worthy of praise;
his greatness no one can fathom.    (Psalms 145:1-3 NIV)
