Nothing Else Matters
I have been thinking about my relationship with God and, while on a walk this evening, the phrase, "Nothing else matters" stuck in my mind. Our relationship with God is of supreme importance and nothing else matters in comparison. Nothing else we do or are involved in is important compared to loving Him and knowing Him. Our primary focus and energy must always be on Him and Him alone. It is total and complete foolishness for our satisfaction, joy, contentment or fulfillment to be from anything or anyone but our Creator and Savior.
It is really quite simple. He brought all things into being. All things are from Him. He is all Wisdom. He knows and controls all things. He is boundlessly good and just in all He does. He poured out His life to save us and bring us into a full and complete relationship with Him. What an incredible love He has lavished upon us in Christ. He alone is worthy of devotion, worship and praise.
Paul's simple yet powerful statement describing his faith, "For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain." (Philippians 1:21 NIV), must be ours as well. Nothing less will do. Nothing less makes sense. To understand who God is and to claim to worship Him yet to seek joy and satisfaction in anyone or anything else is living a lie. There is often such a huge gulf between what we know and what we truly believe. We cannot accept this. We cannot allow this to continue in our lives. Nothing else matters but Him. He changes everything. In Him alone is true fulfillment. In Him alone is true wisdom. Anything else is worldly wisdom completely devoid of any power.
We can't just snap our fingers and make everything better, but we can make a faith choice to devote our hearts and minds to Him and Him alone. We don't need to read more books and we probably don't need to study more scripture. We already know more than enough about God. We must simply look to Him and Him alone. It's not about what we do or think. It's about Him. It's not about trying to be a better person. It's about Him. It's not about devoting our energies and passion into a ministry. It's about Him. Nothing else matters but Him. He must be our Alpha and Omega. We are completely and totally fulfilled in Him.
Until we make the choice to follow Him with all of our hearts, everything else is a waste of our time. We could read all the classic books about knowing God and knowing God's will and living a life pleasing to God, but if our hearts are not fixed on Him, this would be just more information in our heads. This knowledge, by itself, has no eternal value. We do not need more information or knowledge. If we have been believers for any length of time, we know enough. We need to consider carefully what we know about God and purpose to live in accordance with this truth. God is the sovereign ruler of all heaven and earth and knows all things. Rather than allow our hearts and minds to be anxious about tomorrow, we must make the choice to fix our hearts and minds on Him who knows and controls tomorrow. We must believe and trust what we know to be true about God.
Who or what is on your heart and mind? What do you think about? Who or what captivates your heart? Direct your heart to Him and Him alone. Seek after Him. Listen to Him. Trust Him with your every moment. Let Him be God in your life. Don't settle for anything less.
Is this something you can complete in five minutes? No. Will this fix all your problems? No. It is the best thing anyone can do, though. Devoting our hearts to Him and enjoying Him to the fullest is the reason you were created. We will still have doubts and struggles, but we must work through these challenges in the context of a life centered upon Him. Don't try to fix yourself up separately from Him. Love Him with all your heart and enjoy each moment of your life in intimate fellowship with Him.
Let your mind and heart be centered on Him in all of life. Make the devotion of the thoughts and meditation of your heart on Him the number one priority in your life. We all have gripping issues and challenges which can sap our strength and hope. Don't let any challenge or blessing distract you from Him, your only Hope and Joy. In the midst of everything, devote your thoughts and heart to worship of Him and Him alone.
With our hearts and minds fully devoted to Him, we can then learn and grow in a so much more profound way as we study His word, fellowship with other believers and listen to good preaching and teaching. With hearts focused on our Lord, captivated by His love and trusting in His goodness, we can follow Him in confidence and joy. We can never reach perfection in this life, but we can make a choice to seek Him and devote our hearts to Him in all things. We can declare that "nothing else matters" and love Him and trust Him with all of our hearts.
